Starship: Will Elon Musk’s most powerful space rocket reach Mars?
American billionaire Elon Musk’s company SpaceX has tested a new rocket system that has the potential to become the most powerful rocket system in history.
Can the SpaceX Starship reach Mars?
31 of the 33 engines of the Starship rocket system were fired together during this static test.
During the test, which lasted only a few seconds, all objects were held in such a way that no movement was possible.
The spacecraft’s first space flight could be possible in the next few weeks, but before that, SpaceX will review the results of a test on Thursday
The test was conducted at a location near the US-Mexico border called Boco Chica, where SpaceX has established a research center.
After the test, Elon Musk stated on Twitter that the team had shut down one engine on its own before the test, while one engine shut down on its own, causing 31 of the 33 engines to run.
He said that this number is also enough to access the space.
It should be noted that such a large number of engines is the characteristic of this rocket system.
The closest system to this was the Soviet Union’s N-One rocket in 1960, which was developed to carry astronauts to the Moon.
This rocket also had 30 engines arranged in two circles. However, the N-1 rocket failed four times and was aborted.
This Super Heavy Booster of SpaceX is capable of generating 70% more thrust than N-One with its 33 advanced units.
US space agency NASA’s new Mega Rocket Space Launch System, which was sent into space for the first time in November, is also nothing compared to the capability of SpaceX’s Starship.
Elon Musk has high hopes for this rocket. They want it to be used to send people and satellites into space.
Will Starship be the most powerful rocket?
NASA has already approached SpaceX to develop a rocket system that could once again land astronauts on the lunar surface under the Artemis program.
Elon Musk himself is focusing on Mars. Accessing and populating this distant planet is their long-standing dream.
However, if the Starship becomes operational, it could be a game-changer not only because of the volume it can carry into space.
Another important feature of this rocket is that its concept makes it reusable, whereby both the Super Heavy Booster and the spacecraft mounted on it, can be returned to Earth and sent back into space.
Which means the Starship will operate like an airline and not use a single rocket, saving money in the long run.
SpaceX is currently trying to figure out why all of the rocket’s engines failed to fire.
Damage to the launch pad will also be assessed during this testing, as previous small-volume engines have breached the concrete surface below, which had to be repaired.
Elon Musk plans to travel to space via Starship in February or March. However, for the most recent test, the upper part of the rocket, known as the ship or ‘upper stage of the rocket’, was removed to avoid any damage.
